Hydrogen (H2) is the most abundant element on earth. It is also an alternative fuel with very high energy content by weight. Hydrogen can be found at enormous quantities in the air, water, hydrocarbons, and other organic matter.
Hydrogen is also a versatile energy carrier that can be harvested, stored, and used to power almost every end-use energy need. In its liquid form, hydrogen can be burnt to power space rockets!
A Hydrogen Fuel Cell is an energy conversion device that can efficiently and effectively capture and harness the energy stored inside hydrogen. Through this system, we can convert hydrogen (gas or chemical hydrides) into electricity.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell has a broad range of applications, including powering buildings, transportation units, portable electronic devices, and back-up power systems. They are grid-independent and eco-friendly.

In a nutshell, a Hydrogen Fuel Cell System consists of 2 main modules:
Fuel Cell Stack - the Power Generating Module
This module is the heart of any fuel cell power system. It combines hydrogen gas stored in a tank or cartridge, and oxygen from the air to produce electricity, heat and water. A typical fuel cell stack may consists of hundreds of fuel cells.

Fuel Cell Cartridge - the Energy Storage Module
This module acts as the fuel storage unit for the fuel cell system. Hydrogen can be stored either in its original form (compressed gas in high pressure cylinders), in liquid form (in cryogenic tanks), or in solid chemical form (as chemical hydrides). In its solid state, hydrogen can be extracted through the process of hydrolysis.

The main benefit of electric fuel cell power solution is identified as the ratio of the energy stored in the solution per unit of weight (Wh/kg). Compared to the commonly-used lithium battery, this Wh/kg ratio is 2 to 5 times higher (at systems’ level), giving to an electric load of 2 to 5 times more autonomy in the field.
